ABSTRACT
Introduction: Efficacy of a psychomotricity program for postural balance in children with cerebral palsy with cortical level of motor development. The psychomotricity is a set of mechanisms that influence the intentional or significant act of child, for stimulate or modify it, using as mediators body attitude and its symbolic expression.
Objective: To analyze the efficacy of a psychomotricity program for improving postural balance in children with cerebral palsy (CP) with cortical level of motor development.
Patients and methods: This study was conducted at the Physical Therapy Department of the Children Rehabilitation Center Teleton (Mexico, Mexico). This is a prospective, longitudinal and cohort clinical study, and each patient was his/her own control. Were assessed the static and dynamic motor maturation of patients with Vayer test before and after applying the psychomotricity program. The study was conducted in two phases. Phase I: muscle tone and inhibitory brake; Phase II: static and dynamic balance exercises.
Results: 10 patients completed the experimental program, 8 male and 2 females, with range age of 5 to 12 years (Mean 7.4y), before the experimental program the motor maturation age of the experimental group was age of maturation before the program was 2 to 8 (Mean 3.5) and postprogram progress was achieved averaged 1.6 in both the Dynamic Equilibrium and the Static, the analysis showed a statistical significance in either analysis by the Wilcoxon test (p = 0.01 for the dynamic equilibrium and (p = 0.004 for static equilibrium).
Conclusion: Psychomotor program is an effective tool to improve the postural balance in children with CP.
