ABSTRACT
Introduction: 20 to 30 percent of patients with epilepsy are refractory, but many of them improve or become free of seizures after surgery treatment.
Objective: To investigate the improvement after surgery in patients with refractory epilepsy in our reference center, which recently began with this procedure, and compare our results with the obtained in other hospitals.
Methods: We analyzed a total of 18 patients with focal and generalized refractory epilepsy, applying comparative analysis in terms of the number of seizures before and after surgery, using Wilcoxon test.
Results: 10/18 patients (55.6%) were female and 8 (44.4%) male, with ages ranging from 17 to 48 years and an average of 31; age of onset of epilepsy from 6 months to 29 years, average 9.6 years. The average number of seizures was 79.2 per month before surgery and 20.6 after surgery. 11 patients (61.1%) had less than 6 seizures on average per month, and 3 (16.7%) of them were free of seizures (T of Wilcoxon p = 0.001).
Conclusions: The vast majority of studies in the literature show a reduction in the number and intensity of seizures after surgery. In our series the results are encouraging, and led to the development of a programme within our institution for the surgical treatment of epilepsy.
