ABSTRACT
Aim: Determine the prevalence of Burnout Syndrome on the workers of Women’s Hospital “Adolfo Carit Eva”, compare the prevalence of each studied group and propose possible hypothesis that explain the results. Methods: This is an observational study, transversal cohort type, we took a representative sample of the total workers of Women’s Hospital “Adolfo Carit Eva”, and applied the MBI to 140 workers divided by different categories according to their labors during the first half of 2009. Results were analyzed statiscally by X2 using a (P ≤0,05), they were also compared among each worker’s category, so we could determine possible differences between them.
Results: The result of the division by categories resulted in 12,10% administrative labors, 42,74% nursery, 12,90% medical, 20,16% cleaning department and 12,90% nurses’ aides. The results demonstrated that the medical staff and nursery have a high risk at emotional exhaustion, 23,50% and 28,30%, respectively. Administrative staff has also a high emotional exhaustion with 20% risk, contrary to cleaning staff, which present a high risk, 28%, at reduced personal accomplishment. The burnout syndrome was present at 49,06% of nursery department and 44% of cleaning staff; there was no statistical difference (P ≤0,05) among the different departments.
Discussion: Nurses’ aides, nursery and medical staff have high risk percentages at emotional exhaustion, attention should be paid to stress levels, quantity of work, relationships with co-workers and recretional activities so that these levels could be diminished. In reduced personal accomplishment, medical staff and nurses’ aides are low risk groups, contrary to cleaning staff who have a high risk in this category, this coul be possibly to their type of job, low salary, and few oppotunities to stand out. Important attention should be paid to the working environment of nursery which is the group with the highest prevalence of Burnout Syndrome.
