ABSTRACT
Introduction: atrial fibrillation is the most frequent heart arrhythmia in the clinical practice; which is qualified as an epidemic that has important social repercussions. Objective: to characterize the atrial fibrillation in the Unit of Coronary Care at “Dr. Leon Cuervo Rubio” General Hospital in Pinar del Rio.
Material and Method: a descriptive and retrospective research was carried out from July 1, 2011 to July 1, 2012. The sample was comprised of the patients admitted suffering from atrial fibrillation.
Results: 70 year-old patients and older along with female sex prevailed with 63,3% and 61,2% respectively. Persistent clinical pattern was the most frequent found 38,7%, followed by paroxysmal type 30,6%; hypertension was the most frequent co-morbidity in more than 50%. Amiodarone was the most used therapeutic option in the patterns of the first episode, paroxysmal and persistent with 46,9%, classifying them as moderate risk (59,2%), followed by 24,5% of high risk; 100% of the patients presented high risk and underwent oral administration of anticoagulants, 96,5% of the patients were also classified as moderate risk.
Conclusions: ages from 70 and more and female sex prevailed; persistent clinical pattern was the most frequent along with hypertension as an associated morbidity. Amiodarone was the most used therapeutic option. Moderate risk prevailed and oral administration of anticoagulants was used in the majority of patients presenting moderate and/or high risks.
