ABSTRACT
Introduction: Cerebral palsy is an important cause of disability in the child. Its incidence is estimated in 1.5 to 2.5 per
1,000 born alive and there is evidence of an increasing trend. During the last century, multiple therapeutic methods have
been developed for the treatment of these neurological sequels. The Neurologic Restoration Program (PNR) has been
applied for the last l5 years at CIREN.
Objective: To evaluate the variability of its efficacy in the application of a
Neurologic Restoration Program on children with cerebral palsy and to identify prognostic factors for the children’s
functional recovery. Patients and methods: All the clinical records of patients with cerebral palsy, especially of those
hospitalized since January 2000 up to December 2005 were reviewed for a total of 174 children that underwent the
Neurologic Restoration Program. Selected data were taken from these patients that were later statistically processed.
Results: A gain in points was demonstrated in all the Gross Motor Function (GMF) areas, before and after PNR with
statistical significance. This efficacy is not homogeneous and it varies according to different variables. The analysis
performed showed that the patient’s age, number of PNR cycles, extension of lesion, absence of cognitive alterations
and epilepsy, absence of alterations in cranial MRI and in Somatosensory Evoked Potentials constitute the factors for a
good functional prognosis.
Conclusions: There is a variability in the efficacy of a Neurologic Restoration Program in
children with cerebral palsy.
