ABSTRACT
Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a serious condition and frecuently fatal. Because of
this, the importance of timely identification of risk factors in order to carry out an adequate prophylaxis
and in the case, to give an adequate treatment.
Objective: To analyze the prophylactic, medical and surgical treatment of venous thromboembolism
and identify frequencies, relationships and predictability of the disease with the studied variables.
Material and methods: Cross-sectional and retrospective study, held in the Hospital Español de
México over a period of two years. Data were collected from medical records, including the calculation
of scales of Wells, Caprini and several variables.
Results: We included 105 patients with evidence of VTE, of which, most of them are found at high risk
and likelihood of developing the disease. Prophylaxis was applied to 9% and it was observed that in a
large proportion of the patients that are not handled by angiology, the anticoagulant therapy was administered
at levels below those recommended by the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP)
and it was associated with a higher rate of complications, especially with the use of low molecular
weight heparin.
Conclusions: Despite the availability of effective thromboprophylaxis and wide dissemination of clinical
guidelines, this is poorly used or prescribed inappropriately. Adherence to the guidelines of prophylaxis
and treatment, decreases complications substantially.
