ABSTRACT
A cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried in the Diabetic Center of Ciego de
Avila from June 2009 to June 2010, with the aim to determine the prevalence of diabetic
retinopathy in elderly patients. The sample was integrated by 113 diabetic patients types I and
II with diabetic retinopathy. An ophthalmological clinical history designed by the investigator to
all patients was carried out to them. Diabetic retinopathy was pronounced with more frequency
in patients between 60 and 69 years that 75.2% represented. 62.8% of Feminine sex
predominated, and according to time of evolution of the disease those of more than 10 years
prevailed, with 66 patients that constituted a 58.4% of the sample. The DM type II
predominated with a 85.8%. Associate diseases were hypertension in 57.5%, primary openangle
glaucoma (27.4%) and high cholesterol (13.3%). No proliferative diabetic retinopathy
appeared in 88 patients (77.9%).
