ABSTRACT
Developmental dysplasia of the hip is the most common birth defect and the results of treatment are directly related to the age at the start of treatment. The treatment of so called «borderline» hips is controversial because of the potential risk of overtreatment and complications related to treatment. The most widely used non-operative method involves the use of a dynamic abduction splint, the Pavlik harness which is well established as treatment in infants under four months of age. The harness is indicated in cases of dysplasia, instability and dislocation, which can be detected clinically and confirmed by ultrasonography. Use of the harness should be full time until stability of the hip has been achieved and duration of treatment should be until a normal hip is obtained.
