Who should undergo an ultrasound of the hip? Early diagnosis

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Developmental dysplasia of the hip is the leading cause of early arthritis and is the most common congenital defect in the newborn. The patient’s first contact is responsible of diagnosing and referring patients with this problem in a timely manner.
Early detection: Every newborn should be evaluated by the pediatrician or the family doctor, and should be referred to a specialist before eight weeks of age if any abnormal findings of significant risk factors are detected.
Diagnosis: Medical history and Physical Findings may suggest the presence of developmental dysplasia of the hip, but ultrasound the ideal method to confirm the diagnosis during the first four months of life.
Treatment: Pavlik harness represents the first line of treatment for developmental dysplasia of the hip during the first six months of life.
