ABSTRACT
Aims. To evaluate the awareness regarding venous thromboembolism (VTE) among Mexican graduated internists and internal medicine residents.
Material and methods. We designed a cross-sectional survey using a questionnaire applied to internists mainly during academic meetings.
Results. We collected 1,220 questionnaires. General knowledge about VTE and its risk factors for medical and surgical patients and the medical skills to perform the diagnosis of this disease was quite low. Assessment of the global risk for VTE is not properly done in surgical and medical patients. Level of awareness about these issues was not essentially different between graduated internists and residents.
Conclusions. Awareness regarding VTE risk factors and the degree of diagnostic skills among Mexican internists is very low without significant differences between graduated physicians and residents.
