ABSTRACT
Background: Pericarditis is a disease caused by inflammation of the pericardium secondary to multiple etiologies.
Objective: To know the incidence of pericarditis in our institution, main etiologic causes, diagnostic and treatment.
Secondary end point, to prove combined therapy is not superior to monotherapy in the treatment of idiopathic cases.
Material and methods: Retrospective study, between 2000 and 2010, files of patients with diagnosis of pericarditis of any
etiology were reviewed. Due to the fact that idiopathic pericarditis comprises the major group, it was divided into two: the first one
including all patients who only received non steroidal anti-inflamatories as monotherapy and the second one, with all those patients
with idiopathic pericarditis of any etiology with combined therapy observing differences as for days of hospitalization and number of
recurrences in both groups. The statistical analysis was realized by means of t student test.
Results: Of 213 brought patients, only
120 expired with diagnostic criteria by what the rest was excluded from the study. The incidence of pericarditis was 2% without statistically
significant differences in gender and age. The thoracic pain was the predominant symptom. The average time in days from the diagnosis
up to the beginning of treatment was 6.5 days. Twenty five percent presented at least a recurrence. Between patients with
recurrent pericarditis of any etiology, 43.7 % received anti-inflammatory monotherapy, the rest of them received combined therapy
(steroids and aspirin). The idiopathic pericarditis was the most frequent (62 %), followed by the traumatic one (11%). There was verified
in our study that in the treatment of recurrent idiopathic pericarditis, the combined therapy is not superior to the monotherapy since we
do not observe a statistically significant reduction in the days of hospitalization or recurrences.
Conclusion: Pericarditis is a frequent
pathology with an incidence of 2% in the ABC Medical Center.
