ABSTRACT
Background. The herniation of intraocular tissue through a defect of the ocular Wall, in open-globe trauma, is known as intraocular
tissue prolapse. It is unknown whether this condition is associated with injuries of adverse outcome, which would be useful during
the initial evaluation, since intraocular tissue prolapse can be identified clinically. The proportion of the categories of the prognostic
scale Ocular Trauma Score (OTS) was compared between eyes with open-globe trauma, with and without intraocular tissue
prolapse.
Material and methods. Patients with open globe trauma between January 2001 and September 2011 were evaluated
and qualified according to the OTS; it was identified whether they had intraocular tissue prolapse at the initial evaluation, and the
proportion of OTS categories 1, 2 and 3 in eyes with intraocular tissue prolapse was compared with that in eyes without it (χ2, odds
ratio).
Results. 151 eyes, mean age 27.3 ± 13.7 years, 80 males (53%); 120 eyes had categories of adverse outcome (79.5%) and
89 had intraocular tissue prolapse (58.9%). The proportion of eyes with categories of adverse outcome in eyes with intraocular
tissue prolapse (84.3%), n = 75, did not differ statistically from the proportion in eyes without intraocular tissue prolapse (72.6%,
n = 45, p = 0.08).
Discussion. The presence of intraocular tissue prolapse in open-globe trauma was not associated with features
of adverse outcome; identifying this condition should not modify the initial approach, which must be the same for any defect of
the ocular wall.
