ABSTRACT
There are a variety of surgical alternatives for treatment of rectal prolapse. The ideal surgical procedure should be minimally
invasive, have a low morbidity and no mortality, on the other hand, the functional results should be excellent, without recurrence,
improving continence and preventing constipation. The abdominal approach is most appropriate for young patients, rectopexy,
with or without resection, is the most used. The use of mesh or sutures appear to have similar results. Currently laparoscopic
surgery shows similar efficacy to conventional surgery. The perineal approach is the best option for older patients or those with
high surgical risk, the Delorme technique is the simplest to make, but the perineal rectosigmoidectomy has better results. In this
paper the most common alternatives of surgical treatment are described analyzing their advantages and disadvantages.
