ABSTRACT
The results of surgical treatment carried out in 49 pediatric patients with congenital scoliosis were evaluated, and a follow-up at 2
years minimum. The pre and postoperative scoliosis was measured with Cobb’s method; pelvic bias was determinated, spine
malalignment, affected level, surgical treatment carried out and postoperative complications. There were 32 female and 17 male
patients, with an average age at the time of diagnosis of 1.6 years l.6 years and 7.6 years at surgical treatment. The average followup
at surgical treatment was 7.9 years. The scoliosis averages preoperatively it was of 62º, 42º at immediate postoperatively and
50º at follow-up average at 2 years. No changes showed in average at 4 and 6 years follow-up postoperatively. Pelvic bias averages
preoperatively was 8º and 6 postoperatively. The spine malalignment was measured in 40 mm and 20 mm pre and postoperative
respectively. 37 anterior approach, 16 posterior approach and 3 both were carried out. There were a water-pipe of CSF, 1
nonunion by material fatigue and 2 bar protrusions like complications. The curve progression depend of kind and place located
of defect. The spine malalignment with quick progression is the main surgical indication. The surgical objective is to avoid the
quick curve progression and obtain and maintain the scoliosis correction.
