ABSTRACT
Background. Mesenteric ischemia can appear as one of two clinical different syndromes: acute mesenteric ischemia and chronic
mesenteric ischemia. The chronic occlusive disease of the mesenteric arteries almost always appears in debilitated persons with
generalized atherosclerosis. On the other hand, the mesenteric ischemia can be a sudden phenomenon, as in the embolism of
central origin.
Clinical case. There is analyzed the case of a 45-year-old masculine patient, with precedent of intense smoking, with
chronic mesenteric ischemia whom was realized thrombectomy, endarterectomy and patch of angioplasty of the superior mesenteric
artery, who had abdominal unspecific pain of 24 days of evolution.
Discussion. In spite of the progress in the perisurgical
treatment and the major comprehension of the physiopathology, the mesenteric ischemia is one of the most lethal disorders; the
death rate changes between 50 and 75 %.
Conclusion. The delay of the diagnosis and the therapeutic are the principal factors to
high mortality. The early identification and the opportune treatment before the intestinal irreversible ischemia are essential
to improve the prognosis.
