ABSTRACT
Introduction. The optimal treatment of upper gastrointestinal bleeding improves the outcome and it carries low mortality, for that,
the use of prognostic scales in Urgency Department is important to detect patients with high risk of complications.
Objective. The
aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of Blatchford and Rockall scales to predict the mortality and rebleeding risk.
Materials
and Methods. We analyzed all patients who underwent to upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with diagnostic of upper gastrointestinal
bleeding from January 2006 to October 2009. We realized the statistical analysis with ʹ
2.
Results. We included 926 patients, 509
(55%) males and 417 (45%) females. The gastric and duodenal ulcers were the most important cause of bleeding (49%).
Conclusions. The Blatchford scale is better to detect patients with a high risk of bleeding; however, we not found any difference
between both scales for complicated patients.
