ABSTRACT
Introduction: In the speciality of Dermatology, a percentage of the request is for banal or cosmetic reasons. Although there exist the perception that
this request is increasing, there are no studies in our setting that analyze its trend over time.
Material and methods: First visits attended in the Dermatology Department of the Hospital Comarcal de Sant Boi de Llobregat between 1996 and
2008 were retrospectively studied. Seborreic keratosis, skin tags, capillary hemangioma, solar lentigo and millia were included as banal diagnoses.
This request was compared to other variables.
Results: Along 13 years, 74.994 first appointments were attended, acomplishing criteria for banal 11,833 (15,78%) of them. The percentage of these
diagnoses raised from 3.64% in 1996 to 19.43% in 2008 (Chi square of Mantel-Haenszel; p < 0.001), although in the last five years (2004-2008) this stabilized
(p = 0.977). In older patients (more than 40 years), independently of prevalence, the percentage of banal visits grew faster than in younger ones.
Comment:The banal request has increased fivefold in the last 13 years. Althoug it has stabilized in the last five years, it has done so in a high percentage
of dermatological request.
