ABSTRACT
Mean platelet volume (MPV) is the geometric measurement for the
platelet size and it has an inverse relation with the number of these.
There is still not a specific cut-off value for MPV, considering the
changing values, ethnical differences, the technique used to obtain
the size, and the time for the sample process. Thus, it has been
shown that values above 9.5 femtoliters (fL) are related to diseases
with an inflammatory component, endothelial dysfunction, and a
prothrombotic state. It has been demonstrated that the increase of
MPV is associated with the presence and poor prognosis in metabolic
syndrome, diabetes mellitus, sepsis, cardiovascular diseases,
pulmonary embolism and immuno-inflammatory diseases such as
systemic erythematosus lupus and Behçet’s disease.
The aim of this paper is to review the current concepts, based on
evidence, related to MPV and to emphasize the assessment and
its significance in daily clinical practice.
