ABSTRACT
Introduction. Transient tachypnea of the newborn (NTT) is characterized
by breathing › 60x’ and difficulty breathing. Today is the
1st cause of admission to the NICU, for which we have studied
the risk factors and their likelihood to develop NTT.
Methods.
We included 302 new born from 28 to 42 weeks, admitted in NICU
of Medica Sur (01/05 2000 to 30/12 2007), we excluded multiple
pregnancies, pulmonary disorders and sepsis. We registered: via
birth, infections, diabetes, asthma, rupture of membranes and maternal
factors such as age, sex, Apgar score, weight and gestational
age and neonatal factors. We identified the association between
them and we generated a model by logistic regression to predict the
probability of NTT.
Results. We analyzed 172 boys and 130 girls, of
whom 52% and 48% had NTT respectively. We observed 155 newborns
on term, of them 46% developed tachypnea, it was different
when we compared them with preterm infants, whose 52% developed
NTT. The important risk factors that we found for developing
NTT were: number of pregnancy, gestational age and asphyxia.
Conclusions. There was an association with: number of gestation,
gestational age and asphyxia to develop NTT, however due to the
type of population its appropriate to perform a research to analyze
each factor with a representative sample of the population.
