ABSTRACT
Endometriosis is an extremely prevalent disease, affecting 10-
15% of the population worldwide. In our country, it is estimated
that this disease affects 35% of women with infertility. The etiology
of endometriosis is unknown. Different theories have been
proposed to explain it. The ectopic endometrium can develop
from changes in local cells or by the arrival of endometrial cells.
Numerous alterations in endometriosis have been described
including: innate and acquired genomic disorders, immunological
failure, intense inflammation, local estrogenic excess and poor
progestational response, changes in the extra-cellular matrix and
modifications of neuro neo-angiogenesis in the recipient tissue.
However, the triggering cause and the sequence of events that
lead to the development of the disease have not been established
with certainty. Highlighted in the physiopathology, are the inflammatory
process and the estrogen dependence of the disease. In
the future, the continued histopathogenic research will provide
hope to better understand and solve the enigma of endometriosis.
