Behavior of periodontal emergencies in diabetic adults patients.

ABSTRACT
Introduction: diabetes Mellitus is an endocrine metabolic syndrome, which world wide incidence increases alarmingly it is associated with susceptibility to acute infections.
Objective: determining the behavior of periodontal emergencies in diabetic adults patients according to age and gender.
Material and methods: a descriptive transversal study was made to value the behavior of the most frequent dental emergencies in 108 diabetic adults, from "Julio Antonio Mella" polyclinic, Guanabacoa, Havana from september 2008 to april 2009. Of this universe 31 patients that presented dental emergencies of periodontal origin were selected. The following variables were studied: age, gender and periodontal emergencies(gingival abscess, periodontal abscess, recurrent aphthous stomatitis and pericoronaritis), whose clinical diagnostic came true through the interrogation and the oral exam, taking into account the
diabetes Mellitus like correlated chronic illness. The information was summarized statistically through percentage figures.
Results: the biggest number of patients suffering from
diabetes Mellitus belonged to the group of people older than 60 years with 56.5%, prevailing the female sex. Out of those periodontal emergencies the most frequent was the recurrent aphthous stomatitis, represented by 70,9%.The female sex was the more ones affected, with a 58,1 %.
Conclusions: recurrent aphthous stomatitis showed up in a bigger number of cases for all the age groups, being the group of elders of 60 years and the female sex the most affected.
