ABSTRACT
Introduction The transplanting of organs and tissue are nowadays a unique life hope for some patients suffering a terminal condition. Since the creation of the National Board of Transplants in 1999 the donation in Mexico has been increasing.Material and methods A prospective longitudinal study made in the Transplant Unit of the Hospital Regional No. 1 of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social in Michoacan. The medical records of patients diagnosed with brain death subjected to an organ and tissue procurement during the period of September 2004 to Julio 2010 were analyzed. The following variables were analyzed: Age, gender, blood type, cause of death, type of case and organs procured.
Results 72 organs and tissue from 18 donations, the average age was 24.7 (range 5 months – 57 yrs old), the gender was 9 male (50%) and 9 female (50%). The blood type and Rh were distributed in A+, six; B+, 1; O+, 11. The cause of death were 14 by traumatic brain injury, 1 case of brain anoxia secondary to cardiac respiratory arrest and 3 cases of carebrovascular disease. 14 cases of the donations were medical legal cases. The following organs were procured: A heart, 11 livers, a pancreas, 26 kidneys and 32 corneas.
Conclusions Organ procurement from deceased donors has increased in the late years, but it remains insufficient to cover the demand of organs in patients suffering an illness in terminal stage. In our program of renal and cornea transplanting it is included too, the detection of possible donors. However, the waiting records continue increasing in every hospital. The results we have obtained, though lacking, encourage reflection to keep on working continuously.
