ABSTRACT
Introduction: psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) can be present in the population with certain frequency, but it is a problem when these seizures are coupledwith epilepsy.
Objective: to identify the socio-demographic, biological and psychosocial risk factors that allowthe manifestation of PNES in patients with epilepsy.
Methods: a descriptive study was performed between January of 2012 and January of 2013, of 200 patients with epilepsy, diagnosed by their seizures and according to approaches of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) and with interictalelectroencephalogram (EEG) that attended the multidisciplinary epilepsy consultation of the Surgical &Clinical Hospital joaquínalbarán.All the patients treated in this consultation were studied by a set of psychological tests and discussed by the panel; the suspects of PNES were studied though EEG withinduced seizures. The patients were separated into 3 groups, Group A or control group (with epilepsy and without psychiatric disorders), Group B (with epilepsy seizures and PNES), Group C (with epilepsy seizures and cognitive behavioral disorders). The risk factors were compared by using Fisher´s statistical method.
Results: in the group with PNES dominated by females (p=0.0009), revealed depressive states in 97.3% (p = 0.0006), high frequency of epilepsy seizures (p=0.0188. OR=0.2287) and psychosocial disorders (p = 0.0465).
Conclusions: the knowledge of the risk factorsis an important element to be considered at the moment of electingtreatment for the PNEP in patients with epilepsy.
