ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the predictive value of APACHE II score on mortality in an ICU of Mexico.
Design: Prospective study.
Setting: ICU of a second care level, Durango, Mexico.
Patients: A total of 211 patients were included and evaluated during the first 24 hours in the ICU.
Interventions: None.
Measurements and main results: Of a total of 250 patients admitted to the ICU were evaluated 211. The following data were found in survivors (n = 150) and non survivors (n = 52): mean age 60 ± 17.8 vs 55 ± 19.4 years (NS), temperature 36.4 ± 0.8 vs 36.7 ± 1.2°C (p ‹ 0.05), heart rate 93 ± 265 vs 108 ± 26 beats/min (p ‹ 0.05), serum creatinine 1.32 ± 0.88 vs 2.25 ± 1.71 mg/dL (p ‹ 0.05) and APACHE II score 13.9 ± 9.1 vs 23.1 ± 8.6 points (p ‹ 0.05). The predictive mortality was 37.7% and the observed mortality 29.8% (NS).
Conclusion: APACHE II score is useful to evaluate the mortality in an ICU of second level of Mexico.
