ABSTRACT
Introduction: Conventional colonoscopy is the gold standard for diagnosing colon pathology. Virtual colonoscopy is a noninvasive diagnostic method based on tomographic techniques that use computer programs with multiplanar or endoluminal images, simulating the colon examination.
Objective: Determine the diagnostic accuracy of both methods.
Material and methods: Twelve patients with symptoms or colon pathologies were selected for the study. All of them came to outpatient clinic at the colorectal service and underwent both tests. Comparing the precision and diagnostic rate of each one.
Results: Conventional colonoscopy tested positive in twelve patients (100%), while virtual colonoscopy tested positive in nine patients (90%), although only five patients (50%) concurred with the final diagnosis.
Conclusions: Virtual colonoscopy is an auxiliary method in the diagnosis of colon pathologies when it is not possible to perform a conventional colonoscopy. But don’t replace it.
