ABSTRACT
The cadherins are a superfamily of transmembranal glycoproteins, involved in the cell-cell adhesion. The subfamily of classic cadherins contains E- and N-cadherins. Expression and function of E-cadherin is essential for many processes during the embryogenesis; like cell polarization and differentiation of epithelium, but also it was discovered an important role in tumourigenesis. The lost of cell adhesion mediated by E-cadherin is an inicial event of the epithelium-mesenchym transition (EMT) which one is responsible for increased invasion and metastasis in several human cancer development. It was demonstrated that Snail is one of the most important EMT promotors, inhibiting the E-cadherin expression and expression of some other EMT regulators. For this reasons E-cadherin is considerate to be one of the keys of neoplastic transformation.
