ABSTRACT
Background: the traumatic brain injuries (TBI), especially the mild or by concussion, have been overlooked or wrongly diagnosed in accordance
with the international psychiatric literature.
Objetive: question about the consequences of brain trauma concussions in soccer practices in Latin American countries.
Methods: in order to achieve the proposed objective were searched on Medline/PubMed articles between the years of 2000 and 2011,
using as a motto of the search words/key phrases in English: “Concussion and sports”, Concussion and soccer” and “Soccer head injuries”.
Were also used other sources such as books and previous publications portraying, historically, concepts of concussion, post-concussional
syndrome and its harmful effects on the behavior and psyche of compromised by these disorders.
Results: the results showed that the brain trauma by concussion became a significant public health concern because they do not receive
due attention in its consequences. Sports practices contribute to brain trauma, and soccer appears as one of its sources, which translate
by deleterious effects of short, medium and long term.
Conclusion: different criteria regarding the understanding of cerebral trauma type impossible a transposition of data between the searches
performed. At the same time, the existing reference guides are not obeyed and the diagnostic criteria of ICD-10 and DSM-IV are delayed
because the mercy seat of imperials and therapeutic measures consistent.
