ABSTRACT
Stereotactic surgery allows locating specific brain nuclei as it is a high precision technique. To perform on the surgery, it is required a suitable anesthetized brain to locate the area that is desired to work on and to allow the lab animal to recover without complications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of pentobarbital and propofol intraperitoneally for general anesthesia before stereotactic surgery in adult rats. Were used Wistar male rats submitted to three different doses of pentobarbital (33, 40 and 43 mg/kg) at different concentrations (63 and 65 mg/mL) which were combined with propofol at 40 mg/300g (10 mg/mL) adminis-tered intraperitoneally. Results demonstrated that at a dose of 43 mg/kg (63 and 65 mg/mL) obtained a better and faster anesthetic effect. The combination of pentobarbital and propofol intraperitoneally is an effective alternative as an anesthetic procedure for stereotactic surgery, with good safety margin as well as with a prompt recovery. No systemic damage was produced.
