ABSTRACT
The prognosis in sepsis depends on many factors, so it is of our interest in addition to the
epidemiological study of it, its value for the prediction of mortality of various severity indices. A
clinical, analytical, prospective, non-interventionist study was carried out in the Intensive Care Unit,
at the "Arnaldo Milian Castro" University Hospital, from January to December 2009 with the purpose
of determining the value of a group of clinical and laboratory variables, and of the APACHE II,
SOFA, MODS, LIS and Glasgow scales, as values for the prediction of mortality in patients with
severe sepsis, septic shock, or both. 9,4 % of the patients were studied met criteria for severe
sepsis. 64 % of them (32) had at least one episode of septic shock. Mortality was strongly and independently associated with the number of comorbidities and of dysfunctional organs. The scales
we studied were all predictors of mortality.
