What to do when facing a spontaneous haemopneumothorax?

ABSTRACT

The spontaneous haemopneumothorax is, at the same time, an acute and a quite rare health problem which can appear among 1 -12% of the human beings and it mainly affects males, producing a clinical picture of unexplainable signs of hipovolemia in human beings. At present, its management is quite controversial: The selection of patients and the time when a surgical behavior is appropriate, with special emph asis on those patients who achieve to stabilize after a surgery, such as pleurotomy where the bleeding is controlled. On the literature review of the spontaneous haemopneumothorax by the Thoracic surgery team of the institution, some considerations about t he management to follow in the last years are reported and they should be considered as an initial step in the treatment of spontaneous haemopneumothorax, reducing the morbidity and hospital stay when using the video assisted thoracic surgery as a therapeutic procedure which seems to be the most accepted compared to the thoracostomy.
