ABSTRACT
Alpha-2 adrenergic agonists have been used in clinical practice since many years ago, because of their beneficient anti-sympathetic properties, especially in hypertension management. Specifically, clonidine has done well in this area. But also, other clonidine’s properties have been identified that make it useful in anesthetic practice. This properties are analgesia, sedation, ansiolysis and its anti-sympathetic use. These effects are achieved acting basically over alpha-2a receptor subtype. Clinical uses in anesthesiology include the pre, trans and postoperative period, acting as a good preanesthetic drug, lowering other drugs anesthetic requirements and easing emergence and recovery from anesthesia. Also, its use in postoperative pain management has gained an important significance, appreciating that the spinal route of administration is the one that offers the most benefits and advantages, being restricted only by its collateral effects like hypotension, bradicardia and sedation, but they do not produce hemodynamic disorders that can alter its clinical indication.
