ABSTRACT
Introduction: Neural tube closure defects such as myelomeningocele (MM) constitute an important cause of disability as a result of sequelae. Time passed between birth and defect closure has been stated to be an important variable regarding lifelong sequelae in neonate patients affected with this malformation.Objective: To make a comparison between newborns surgically intervened in the first 72 hours of life and those intervened later on.
Results: A total of 74 newborns were included in this study, 35 in group “A” intervened in the first 24 hours after birth and 39 in group “B” who were intervened after this time period. A comparison of physical findings before and after surgery is presented.
Discussion: Results show that patients summited too surgery in the first 72 hours after birth preserve improved motor function.
