ABSTRACT
There are patients with bronchial asthma resistance to habitual and steroid treatments, so we call them steroid resistant, and we must prescribe another pharmacological treatments, to improve the quality of life of these patients, and to diminish the side effects of the steroids. We made a prospective, longitudinal and observational study, in 10 patients with steroid resistant asthma in the Allergy and Clinical Immunology Service of the General Hospital of Mexico. Every patient received 7.5 mg methotrexate (MTX) each week during a forty weeks period in which we checked the lab effects including spirometry and clinical results. In all patients, we obtained a spirometry characterized by a increased of Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV1) 15.2%, Vital Capacity (VC) 28.2 % and increased Total Lung Capacity (TLC) 28.2% too. A low Residual Volume (RV) 81.7%, and minimum adverse reactions of methotrexate. An investigation field is open to look for the use of alternative medicine in the treatment of steroid resistent asthma.
