ABSTRACT
Introduction: recent advances have made magnetic resonance (MR) an additional tool for diagnosis and local staging of breast cancer. The sensitivity of the method to detect infiltrating cancer is 98%, provided it is used properly, in cases where it is clinically indicated and with established technical requisites and diagnostic
criteria, without overlooking the correlation with conventional methods.
Objective: the objective of this article is to analyze the established clinical indications for breast MR and make known the protocol used at our center.
Material and methods: the most representative cases examined in C.T. Scanner del Sur, in the magnetic resonance department, with a Siemens 1.5 tesla resonator were chosen.
Diagnostic criteria: the criteria to be taken into consideration for better evaluation are described.
Clinical indications: the different indications for MR described in the literature and established by the American College of Radiology (ACR) are described.
Conclusion: MR is an imaging mode that provides morphological and functional information that complements mammography and breast ultrasound; it is highly useful in local staging of breast cancer and in evaluation of breast implants.
