ABSTRACT
The objective was to analyze the consumption of food during school hours for children 6 to 11 years old according to
the presence of overweight or obesity. A cross-sectional design with 160 children, 6 to 11 years old from an
elementary school. We determined the food intake during school hours according to the presence of overweight or
obesity (BMI percentile = 85) or healthy weight (BMI percentile 5-84); both the food and drink sent by their parents
and those who bought at school. The consumption of calories and macronutrients during school hours was compared
with the Student t test. Overweight/obese children reported spending more money in school (
p ‹0.05). No differences
were found in the average consumption of energy or macronutrients between groups; the food categories most
frequently consumed were candies, snacks and sweetened drinks, with no differences between groups. Food habits
of our children are not healthy, either in overweight and non-overweight children; excessive energy consumption and
simple sugars can have short-term adverse effects in overweight and obese children.
