Clinical epidemiological characteristics in patients with nosocomial infections in ICU

ABSTRACT

Background: The nosocomial asepsia is a problem for hospital institutions, the family and the community for the raw material cost and humane represented. Objective: To describe the epidemiological characteristics of patients with nosocomial infection in the Intensive Care Unit at Camilo Cienfuegos University Hospital in Sancti Spíritus province from 2008-2010. Methodology: A descriptive, transversal study was carried out. 564 patients were included who acquired nosocomial asepsia in the ICU in the pointed out period. Results: The total of cases included was 312, they were over 65 years and 51.3 % belonged to male sex. 83.9 % belonged polyvalent ICU. The most frequent place of infection was the respiratory place. The Enterobacter aerogenes and the Acinetobacter were the main isolated germs. The nosocomial asepsis rate was 5.9 infections per each 100 patients discharged and the lethality rate was 37.4 %. Conclusion: The incidence rate of nosocomial infections in the Intensive Care Units was low if compared with other studies. The respiratory asepsia was the most frequent. The Enterobacter aerogenes prevailed in the isolated germs.
