ABSTRACT
Seven year old female with Down syndrome seeks medical attention in account of abdominal pain, vomit of gastric content which evolved in a 12 hour period, abdominal distention for 4 hours. Upon examination, signs of inflammation of the peritoneum were found, diminished peristalsis, tympanic abdomen and involuntary muscular resistance. An attempt to place a nasogastric tube was unsuccessful, so an abdominal x –ray in standing position was taken. The film showed a gastric bubble in left thoracic cavity, multiple air levels and the absence of air in the distal intestine. Gastric volvulus is a rare entity in pediatrics, and is defined as a complete or partial rotation of the stomach. This rotation can happen in a longitudinal axis (axial – organ torsion) or in a transversal axis (axial – mesenteric torsion). This is a case of a 7 year old female with a surgically corrected cardiac defect who presents with acute abdominal pain and distention in which surgical intervention was required.REFERENCES
