ABSTRACT

Retinitis pigmentosa comprehend a group of inherited disorder that causes a progressive retina degeneration affecting the photoreceptors and their pigmentary epithelium. Characterized by night blindness and diminished visual field. The age for the symptoms onset ranges from infancy to adulthood. On examination, the back of the eye shows paleness in the optic disc, pigment deposits in a bone-spicule pattern. The included diagnostic tests are dark adaptometry, electroretinography. The differential diagnosis can be done with eye trauma, infection related eye inflammation, paraneoplastic retinopathy and toxicity by drugs (phenothiazines and chloroquine). There is no definite treatment.
