ABSTRACT

We conducted an extensive review of the literature that included actual diagnostic and therapeutic methods for anal incontinence. Anal incontinence is a debilitating condition with important medical, social and economic implications. The therapeutic options available include conservative non surgical and surgical procedures. The etiology for anal incontinence is multifactorial and the decision about which treatment should be offered depends on the underlying factors, the severity of the symptoms and the impact on quality of life. The purpose of this study is to present the different diagnostic and treatment alternatives as well as recommendation for its use and level of evidence suggested in different international consensus in order to bring the best therapeutic option for the patient.
