ABSTRACT
Objective: To point out specific ocular troubles in chronic Chagas’ disease.
Patients and methods: We did 2 different ELISA test for Chagas in 2,293 potentially blood donors at the Blood Bank of the General Hospital of Mexico. 84 individuals were positive (3.66%); 65 out of them came for clinical ophthalmologic review. We did anterior and posterior ocular exploration to everyone, of them. From the same population and age rank we choose 80 potentially blood donators (haemodisposing) seronegatives to Chagas as control group.
Results: Group study: One haemodisposing person confirmed the Romaña sign. In 8 out of the 65, we saw conjunctival manifestations as papilar conjunctivitis in three of them, blepharoconjunctivitis in two, one with tarsal foliculosis, one with nasal pterigion and one with conjunctival venous anomaly. 4 from the 65 patients had high intraocular pressure and changes in the optical disc without glaucoma. Control group: There were no changes in ocular fundus, 5 patients had pterigion, 2 had strabism, one with iris coloboma and 2 with cumulation of conjunctival pigment.
Conclusion: We did not find ocular manifestations, which could be associated to Chagas’ disease.
