ABSTRACT
Background: Malnutrition is associated with increased morbi-mortality rates.
Objetive: The aim of the study was to determine the nutritional status based on Mini Nutritional Assessment and body mass index and to evaluate its relationship with gender, age and calf circumference among elderly people.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in 62 elders. Standardized procedures were followed to apply the Mini Nutritional Assessment and to measure weight, height, waist and calf circumferences. Data analysis included chi-squared tests and odds ratios were estimated.
Results: More than half of the study sample were female (75.8%). The mean age was of 69.0 (± 6.0) y.o. Prevalence of risk of undernutrition and undernutrition was 59.7 and 11.3%. The combined prevalence of overweight and obesity was 80.7% and that of abdominal obesity was 48.4%. Elders with calf circumference ≤ 31 had 14 times the risk of overweight or obesity (95% CI = 3.36-63.95). Being female and having calf circumference ≤ 31 showed 9.6 and 8.4 times the risk of abdominal obesity (95% CI: 1.93-47.38 and 95% CI = 1.69-41.74).
Conclusions: In primary health care, undernutrition, overweight and obesity among the elderly are highly frequent and of interest due to associated risk factors.
