ABSTRACT
Introduction: The initiative “2010, the Year of the Lung” promoted the World Spirometry Day (WSD) with the determination to encourage early detection of respiratory diseases. This paper aims to report the results of spirometry tests performed in the state of Yucatan during the said WSD.
Material and Methods: Cross-sectional study that includes data from spirometry tests performed in adults between 20 and 80 years old without any previously diagnosed respiratory disease; in addition, without inhaled corticosteroid nor bronchodilators and in absence of acute respiratory illness within 4 weeks.
Results: 91 participants with 91 spirometry tests were included. The age median was 40 years, with an interquartile (IQR) of 30-53 and 56% were female. According to international standardized guidelines, 30% of all tests showed an abnormal pattern in lung function, of these, 33% with airflow obstruction and the severity ranged between mild and moderately severe.
Conclusions: In a group of people from the state of Yucatan the percentage of abnormal tests was significant. We must keep promoting the spirometry during the initial evaluation of respiratory diseases
