ABSTRACT
Background: Susan Kobasa´s and Aaron Antonovsky´s psychosocial models named Hardiness and Sense of Coherence, respectively, suggest individual characteristics that can modulate burnout and its negative consequences for health professionals.
Problem: Test modulating effect of psychosocial variables upon burnout in health professionals. Method: Christine Maslach´s MBI-HSS, Susan Kobasa´s Personal Point of Views and Aaron Antonovsky´s Orientation to Life questionnaires were anonymously administered to 370 health professionals (physicians and nurses) from the first health care level.
Odds ratios, t test for means differences and Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated.
Results: Lack of personal accomplishment was the only burnout variable that showed high values. Exhaustion and depersonalization showed medium values according to national norms. Women had lower values than men in lack of personal accomplishment (burnout) and control (fardiness) variables. Physicians showed higher values than nurses in burnout variables, exhaustion and lack of personal accomplishment. Modulating variables were associated with lower values of burnout variables.
Conclusions: Exhaustion and depersonalization had medium level values in surveyed health professionals, but lacks of personal accomplishment values were higher. Physicians´ levels of exhaustion were higher than nurses´ values. In general terms, modulating variables selected were statistically independent from participants´ sex, profession and time of work experience. The modulating role upon burnout of Hardiness and Sense of Coherence psychosocial models was supported by the results obtained. These results are of particular significance for the prevention of burnout in health professionals.
