ABSTRACT
Purpose: It is unknown the cause of primary open-angle glaucoma and normal pressure glaucoma, rising several theories about this problem.
Objective: To determine the immunological factors involved in the optic atrophy in patients with normal pressure glaucoma.
Design: Prospective observational case series.
Methods: With ELISA test we counted antibodies in serum of patients with normal pressure glaucoma (NPG) comparing with a study group of patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
Results: Immunoglobulins were higher in patients with NPG group: IgA 13/15 patients and none in POAG group. IgG in 13/15 patients were higher in NPG group and 1/20 patients with POAG. There were significantly difference in the average of antinuclear antibodies in patients with NPG and none en POAG group. The smooth antimuscle antibodies were positive in 2/15 patients with NPG.
Conclusions: The presence of immunological mechanisms in the optic atrophy in the patients with normal pressure glaucoma comparing with primary open-angle glaucoma is probable.
