ABSTRACT
Objective. To know if the factors associated to the retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) are the same reported by others.
Material and methods. To groups of premature infants ‹ 1,500 g were compared: 16 with ROP and 41 without ROP. All of them were treated in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and they were closely examinated by an ophthalmology since the 3rd week of life. Clinical variables and therapeutic interventions done in both groups were compared.
Results. In the group 16 with ROP, in 8 of them the ROP was grade I; there was 2 neonates with grade II, 4 with grade III and 2 grade V. There were statistical differences in body weight (with ROP: 1,235 ± 156 g, without ROP: 1,347 ± 149 g), gestation age, days with ventilation, days of stay in the NICU, hospital stay, total parental nutrition (TPN) and red cell package transfusion.
Conclusions. The risk was higher in those of smaller gestation age and body weight at birth. They also had more days with ventilation and days the NICU. The results are similar to others reported.
