Emotional modulation of memory: neurobiological findings

ABSTRACT
In the last decades Neuroscience research has confirmed that we are able to remember better those events that
were associated to an emotion, specially stress. The aim of this work was to review the more relevant neurobiological
findings related to the emotional modulation of memory. The amygdala, specifically the basolateral nucleus, has a
determining participation in emotional/stressful events consolidation; stress hormones, noradrenaline and
glucocortidoids are also reported. This enhancement, demonstrated in animal studies and neuropsychological human
research, has been observed in information consolidation and recall for declarative memory, as well as in the classic
conditioning for non-declarative memory, and it is mediated by functional and morphological changes in the amygdala
and other related brain regions, specially the hippocampus. The relevance of knowledge about neurobiological bases
of this enhancement effect is concluded due to its implications for psychiatric disorders related to stress.
