ABSTRACT
Several studies in women have indicated that vaginal colonization with
Ureaplasma
urealyticum can be associated with an increased risk of developing bacterial
vaginosis, pelvic inflammatory disease and post-partum septicaemia. Premature
rupture of membranes and preterm labour and birth have also been associated
with these bacteria.
Ureaplasma urealyticum is a prevalent (40 to 80%) colonizer
of the lower genital tract of pregnant women. While up to 80% of women may be
colonized with
Ureaplasma urealyticum, only a small proportion of these women
develop chorioamnionitis. Ureaplasma urealyticum was isolated in 31% of the
total samples. PCR detected in a 42% of the samples the amplification product
(429 bp) that allows to identify the presence of
Ureaplasma urealyticum.
