Diagnosis and treatment of Zenker´s diverticulum

ABSTRACT

Zenker’s diverticulum represents 60-65% of all esophageal diverticula. Fifty percent of Zenker’s diverticulum are present between 7a and 8a decades of life. Dysphagia is the principal symptom, others symptoms are halitosis, odinophagia, weight loss. Radiology and endoscopy studies are useful in the diagnosis. Esophageal radiography technique with double contrast films makes the diagnosis. Treatments are: Crycopharingeal myotomy. Crycopharingeal myotomy and diverticulopexy. Diverticulectomy and crycopharingeal myotomy and endoscopic diverticulotomy. In this article we report 3 cases of Zenker’s diverticulum, found in 6,500 clinical studies between January 1999 to April 2004, in the Servicio de Gastroenterología del Hospital General de México.
