ABSTRACT
Introduction: Patients suffering from epilepsy are studied with the aim of carry out a study based on ethical problems, with the objective to assess the comorbidity of depression present on the population of adult patients that visit the service of Neurology during a period of two years and to study the mainly risk factors and to contribute to the bioethical development of these patients.
Method and Material: Two hundreds patients suffering from epilepsy are studied in the service of Neurology from the Specialized Treatment Center of the Psychiatric Hospital of Havana within a period of 2 years. They were assessed with evaluation instruments and interview. The patients with epilepsy and depression are assed according to the social- demographic, biologic, and psychosocial and medicine risk factors. Chi2 and Odds ratio statiscal instruments were applied.
Results: On the social – demographic factors there is more depression on women and adults older than 25. On the biologic factors depression is present on patients with a high frequency of crisis and local epilepsies of the temporal lobule. It was not observed any risk factor in the medicine ones. . On the psychosocial risk factors that influenced the patients are the emotional maladjustment, interpersonal adaptation, economic situation, crisis adaptation, the medicines and the global psychosocial functioning.
Conclusions: The comorbidity of depression with epilepsy in Cuba is higher than in similar populations from other countries. In the association depression – epilepsy there are more influence from the psychosocial factors. It is possible to increase the bioethical development through a better psychosocial welfare for a satisfactory quality of life of these patients.
