ABSTRACT
Insulin is a hormone released by pancreatic beta cells
in response to elevated levels of nutrients in the blood,
controlling critical energy functions such as glucose
and lipid metabolism. When insulin binds to the insulin
receptor (IR), the activated receptor triggers multiple
signaling pathways that mediate the biological actions
of insuline. Failure of target cells to respond to insulin
presumably because of defects in the insulin signaling
pathway, a state known as insulin-resistance, is a major
attribute to the pathological manifestations associated
with diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2), one of the first
causes of death in Mexico and worldwide. The objective
of the present review is to unravel the molecular basis
for insulin actions and the mechanisms involved in
regulating its effects. Understanding these mechanisms
will allow us to understand what are the causes
associated with the development of insulin resistance
and DM2.
